IFMSA-USA is the USA national affiliate of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), a global community of medical students with over one million medical student members active in 88 countries.  Since 1951, IFMSA has provided an important co-curricular opportunity for medical students worldwide to gain exposure to critical international health issues, and to become advocates at a young issues that they will face later as practitioners and global health leaders.

Nationally, IFMSA-USA has been the USA national affiliate of IFMSA since 1992.  IFMSA-USA is governed through a Board of Trustees... and is led by a group of National Officers, a group of medical students that maintain primary responsibility for representing IFMSA-USA to IFMSA, and for bringing the opportunities available through the global community of IFMSA to the medical student members of IFMSA-USA.  Get involved by learning about what our National Officers do!  Support is offered to the medical student leaders of IFMSA-USA through the IFMSA-USA National Headquarters.

Locally, medical schools maintain individual chapters, or "Local Member Organizations," that orient their activities around international health issues.  Please see if your school is listed and let us know if your chapter and contact information is still accurate. If you are interested in becoming a contact person for IFMSA-USA, please E-mail the IFMSA-USA National Headquarters!  Individual medical student members join IFMSA through a one-time membership fee, and  participate in the many international opportunities available through our group.

IFMSA acts globally, nationally, and locally to raise awareness of transnational health issues and to make the world a better place.

  History

The involvement of the United States of America in the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations dates from shortly after the founding of IFMSA in 1951.
IFMSA was first a collaborative effort borne of the post-World War II sentiment of cooperation among medical students in Europe, designed to ameliorate the difficulty in securing international health electives for medical students.
